No Fault Insurance.
The concept of “No Fault Insurance” is one of
the most misunderstood in the insurance
industry. Many people assume that the insurance
companies do not assign fault to claims when
they are paid. This is untrue. Each and every
claim is deemed to be an at-fault claim or not
at fault claim.
An even more prevalent misunderstanding is that
a person can file a claim against the person who
is at-fault in the accident. With the Michigan
No-Fault Laws, you are only able to collect a
maximum of $500.00 from the at-fault party,
regardless of the extent of the damage he/she
did to your vehicle. If you are carrying full
coverage on your vehicle through your own
insurance company, they will repair your
vehicle. If you are only carrying the PLPD
(Liability Only) coverage on your vehicle, you
will only be able to collect $500.00 from the
at-fault party.
Home Insurance “Urban Legend”
Vehicles stored in the garage are covered if the
home burns even if the vehicle is not listed on
the policy.
Many people assume that their recreational
vehicles and assorted “toys” are insured
automatically under the home insurance policy
even when they are not listed on the policy. However, the standard home policy will
specifically exclude motorized vehicles except
those used to maintain the property like a lawn
mower. In order to receive coverage for those
vehicles, they must be listed on the homeowner’s
policy.
